What "Tesla Certified Installer" means
Tesla certifies electricians who've completed its installer training for Wall Connector and Powerwall work and lists them in a public locator so owners can find one nearby. We went through that process and we're on the list. We're also a ChargePoint Certified Installer and a licensed Tennessee electrical contractor, TN Lic 80656.
What it means in practice: we've installed the Wall Connector enough times to know its settings, its commissioning app, and the ways a Memphis garage can complicate it.
Wall Connector installation
The Wall Connector hardwires to a dedicated 240-volt circuit. It can be set to several amperages, and the setting we choose depends on what your panel can support after a load calculation, not on what the box says it can do at its maximum. Higher isn't always better. For nearly everyone, even a lower setting means a full battery every morning, and it can save you a panel upgrade.
We mount the unit where the cable reaches the charge port without crossing a walkway, run the circuit from the panel, terminate, test, and commission it through the Tesla app with you present.
Powerwall
We've upgraded two Tesla Powerwall systems for homeowners in the area. If you have a Powerwall that needs service or an upgrade, call and describe the system. We'll tell you plainly whether it's a job we take on.
How a Tesla install goes in Shelby County
- Estimate. Free. We look at the panel, the parking spot, and the path between them.
- Permit and MLGW. We submit for the electrical permit and provide MLGW a load calculation for the new circuit. If MLGW has to upgrade anything on their side to carry the load, they bill a fee, and that fee is the customer's responsibility. We'll flag it early if we think it's coming.
- Install. A typical Wall Connector install is done in one day. Scope, the building code jurisdiction, and the route of the circuit are what stretch it.
- Commissioning. We prefer you're home at the end so the Wall Connector joins your Wi-Fi and shows up in the Tesla app before we pack up.
What affects the price
Labor and materials for a typical charger install run $700 to $1,200 when you supply the Wall Connector. The variables are the same as any Level 2 install: the distance from your electrical service to the mounting spot, what's in the way (finished walls, concrete, a detached garage), whether the panel has room, and any MLGW fee. If the panel has to be replaced, that's a separate item, typically $1,800 to $2,600. Powerwall work is quoted per system after we've seen it.
Why it's worth choosing a certified installer
A Wall Connector is a $50,000-plus car's daily fuel pump. The installer decides the breaker size, the wire gauge, the amperage setting, and whether the panel is safe to add to. Getting one of those wrong doesn't usually show up on day one. Certified installers have been trained on the equipment and have a name on Tesla's list to protect. We also stand behind every install with a one-year parts and workmanship warranty.
Where we install
Memphis, Germantown, Collierville, Bartlett, Cordova, Arlington, and the rest of Shelby County. We're based in Bartlett.
Tesla charging questions
How do I check that you are a Tesla Certified Installer?
Look us up on Tesla's installer locator for the Memphis area. Square One Electric is listed there as a Certified Installer.
How long does a Wall Connector install take?
Typically one day. Long runs, finished walls, detached garages, or a panel replacement can add time. We'll tell you after the estimate.
Do I need a permit for a Tesla charger in Memphis?
Yes. We pull the electrical permit and submit the load calculation to MLGW as part of the job.
Will I have to upgrade my panel?
Not always. The load calculation tells us. Many homes can support a Wall Connector at a lower amperage setting, or with a subpanel or load-management device, without a full replacement. If you have a fuse box or a Federal Pacific or Zinsco panel, replacement is the conversation we'll have first.
Can I buy the Wall Connector myself?
Yes. Most customers order it from Tesla and we install it. Tell us the generation you have.
Can a Wall Connector charge a non-Tesla EV?
Yes, with the appropriate adapter, or natively if the vehicle has a NACS port.
Do you work on Powerwall?
We've upgraded two Powerwall systems. Call and describe yours and we'll tell you what we can take on.
