EV Charger Installation in Memphis and Bartlett

Level 2 charging installed by a Tesla Certified and ChargePoint Certified electrician

Most EV owners end up charging at home overnight, and that takes a dedicated 240-volt circuit sized for the charger. That circuit, and the panel it comes from, is the part of the job we do. We install Tesla Wall Connectors, ChargePoint units, and Level 2 chargers for J1772 vehicles at homes and businesses across Shelby County.

If you already own the charger, great. Tell us the model when you call and we'll size the circuit to it.

Who calls us for this

Homeowners who just bought or ordered an EV and want to stop relying on a 120-volt outlet. Drivers who tried a plug-in charger and found it too slow. Landlords and small businesses adding a charger or two for tenants or staff. And a fair number of people whose first electrician quoted a panel upgrade they weren't sure they needed. We'll run the load calculation and tell you what the panel can actually carry.

What we install

  • Tesla Wall Connector. Hardwired to its own 240-volt circuit, set to the amperage your panel supports. Charges Teslas directly and other EVs with the right adapter. We're a Tesla Certified Installer and listed on Tesla's locator. Details on the Tesla page.
  • ChargePoint Home Flex and other ChargePoint units. We're a ChargePoint Certified Installer.
  • Level 2 J1772 chargers. For non-Tesla EVs. Same circuit work, different plug on the wall.
  • NEMA 14-50 outlets. If you'd rather plug in the mobile connector that came with the car. Receptacle-fed charging has its own GFCI requirements under the code, and we install to them.
  • Commercial charging. Multiple units, longer runs, and a service that has to carry all of them at once. See the commercial page.

How the install goes

  1. Free estimate. We look at where you park, where the panel is, and what's between them. That sets the run length and the price.
  2. Permit and load calculation. We submit for the electrical permit and send MLGW a load calculation for the added circuit. If the utility has to do work on their side to carry the load, their fee is the customer's responsibility. We'll tell you if that's likely before you commit.
  3. Install day. A typical installation is done in one day. Long runs through finished walls or out to a detached garage can take longer, and we'll say so up front.
  4. Startup with you there. Most chargers connect to your Wi-Fi during setup, so we prefer you're home at the end to get the app talking to the unit before we leave.

What it costs

Labor and materials for a typical EV charger install run $700 to $1,200 when you supply the charger. What moves the number:

  • Distance from the electrical service to where the charger mounts
  • Whether the run is through open framing, finished walls, or underground to a detached garage
  • Whether the panel has capacity, or needs a subpanel or a full upgrade
  • Any fee MLGW charges for work on their side

If the panel needs replacing, that's a separate line item; typical panel replacements run $1,800 to $2,600. We'd rather show you both numbers than surprise you later.

When the panel is the problem

A panel with no spare capacity is the most common reason a charger install turns into a bigger job. Usually there's more than one way forward: free up space in the existing panel, add a subpanel, use a load-management device so the charger backs off when the house is busy, or replace the panel. The load calculation decides which one fits. If your home still has a fuse box, or a Federal Pacific or Sylvania Zinsco panel, we'll talk about replacement first. More on the panel upgrades page.

EV charger questions

How long does an EV charger installation take?

Most take one day. Trenching to a detached garage, fishing long runs through finished walls, or replacing the panel can extend that. We'll tell you what your job involves after the estimate visit.

Do I need a permit for an EV charger in Memphis or Bartlett?

Yes for a new 240-volt circuit in the jurisdictions we work in. We pull the permit and handle the MLGW load calculation as part of the job.

Can you install a charger I already bought?

Yes. Tell us the brand and model so we size the breaker and wire to what it draws.

Will the charger work with a non-Tesla EV?

Yes. Most non-Tesla EVs in the US charge on J1772, and there are Level 2 units with that connector. A Tesla Wall Connector can also charge other EVs with an adapter.

Can you install outside, or at a detached garage?

Yes, with outdoor-rated equipment and a circuit run to that spot. A detached garage means either trenching a new feeder or confirming the existing one can carry the load, which is the first thing we check.

We install EV chargers in Bartlett, Memphis, Germantown, Collierville, Cordova, Arlington, and the rest of Shelby County.
